Beating on Apple about planned obsolescence policy!

There is a guy named Brian Dipert who is beating on Apple and the planned (and early) obsolescence policies that it operates under in an article/page at Electronics Design News:

QUOTE

Here’s the thing; I pragmatically ‘get’ why Apple chose to chart these particular design courses, from a business standpoint. Non-removable batteries, as I’ve already mentioned, guarantee obsolescence and replacement of the entire system. And O/S obsolescence not only guarantees system obsolescence but also simplifies both O/S development (by limiting backwards-compatibility necessity) and subsequent O/S support. But Apple’s stubbornness also fills up lots of landfills with lots of otherwise perfectly good hardware. And it irks me every time I discover that some widget I’ve bought seemingly only a short time before is now archaic.

Sooner or later, I’ll get sufficiently annoyed that I’ll write off Apple and switch allegiances to some other supplier(s). And I doubt I’m not the only one contemplating such a move each time a widget is deemed outmoded by the powers that be at One Infinite Loop. So enjoy the fiscal benefits of forced upgrades while you can, Apple. Because I seriously doubt that the gravy train will run forever. And for other consumer electronics suppliers out there pondering a clone of Apple’s strategy, I’d strongly urge you to reconsider those plans.

http://www.edn.com/blog/Brian_s_Brain/4178...NToday_20120515

The only Apple's that I have that are good enough to run the latest software belong to my office and as a someone perceived as an Apple Professional I find that sort of irksome!

Clearing Firmware PW on MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2009)

Supposedly you can clear a firmware password on a MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2009) by popping out a memory chip (it has two) and then restarting it while holding down the Command-Option-P-R through three sets of reboot noises. This doesn't even begin to work (although it has worked before for me). Anyone remember this?

BTW, these are the instructions I'm using; and like I said, they worked before:

http://osxdaily.com/2009/10/19/bypass-mac-firmware-password/

I, for one, won't be paying!

Why is it practically everyone I knows (a)hates FB but (b)uses it anyway - though reluctantly? This includes teenagers - not just us middle-aged parental types.

Perhaps it's because everyone else is on it, and it does keep you sort of in touch with people you might not otherwise be in contact with. In my younger son's case, he and his friends seem to conduct a lot of group planning on it, including for schoolwork. Otherwise, both boys profess to hate it.

And I sure don't know anyone who likes Timeline...

Bootable Back-up Doesn't

Switcher friend called with disk issues and couldn't get his bootable BU to boot. 24"IMac, 10.6.8 and Super Duper. Bottom line is with the option in SD to restart is selected with the back-up it works, and the back-up appears in the start up window of System Prefs. Has it ever worked??, I just don't know for sure. After I set it up originally, some time ago,and it booted after the SD back-up I probably figured we were golden.

Re start from the computer HD the Back-up is not seen in the "Start Up Disk" window, only the IMac HD. Safe start and starting with the Option key held down it is still a no show. The external has both USB and Firewire 400 ports. Samo, samo for both.

I brought it home with me and the same situation exists on both of my MBP's.

It is a Western Digital 5000PO32. Any one with similar experience or suggestions???

Daryl
